Lillian Faumuina experienced an unexpected career change when she was stood down from Virgin Australia in March, during the surge of aviation redundancies in wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Having spent 10 years working as an International Long-Haul Flight Manager, Lillian knew she had a passion for customer service and hospitality and applied for a role at Bankstown Sports. In August, Lillian was successful in securing an Operational Support Manger role at Bankstown Sports and has been working 40 hours per week since.
Lillian says she has enjoyed the new opportunity and has thrived in the industry.
“I was thrilled to be offered a job at Bankstown Sports during the pandemic, no two days are the same and I appreciate working in an environment where my ideas are valued. I must admit, I was overwhelmed by all the cuisines available at Bankstown Sports, it’s just like taking a trip around the world! I love the Duck Pancakes from Lucky Cheng’s, they are a must try!”
Lillian has experienced some similarities in her new role that make her feel right at home, and some differences that have been valuable learning experiences.
“The biggest similarity is customer service and creating positive experiences for customers with a can-do attitude. My body was used to regular red eye flights, so adjusting to a 24/7 roster was no problem. Adapting to a new industry has been interesting, I have gained skills in many new areas including managing the operations of restaurants, logging IT faults and being ingrained in the success of daily operations. The team at Bankstown Sports are so passionate and go above and beyond to surprise and delight customers, it has been great to be part of the team”
