Ever wondered what a 'growler' is

By Emma Duxbury | 28 Feb 2017 |

Have you ever wondered what those amber jug-looking things are in Basement Brewhouse?

Well, they’re called ‘growlers’ and they’re used as takeaway vessels for beer.

I asked our Brewhouse Venue Manager to explain the concept…

WHERE DID THE GROWLER ORIGINATE?
The idea of a takeaway container for beer dates back to the late 19th century, when fresh beer was carried from the local pub to one’s home by means of a small galvanised pail. It’s said that the sound of the carbon dioxide escaping from the lid as the beer sloshed around sounded like a growl, hence the name.

HOW DO YOU USE A GROWLER?
The growlers in the Brewhouse hold just under 2L of beer, which is the equivalent of 5 stubbies or cans of beer, or 3.5 pints. You only need to buy one of them, have it filled with your favourite brew, and take it home to enjoy. When it’s empty, rinse it out with water and leave the cap off so it can dry, and then bring it back to the Brewhouse for a refill.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A GROWLER?
They let you enjoy your favourite craft beer at home. Some breweries may not bottle or can their entire range, so growlers allow you to take your brew of choice out of the venue. Our growlers are used for takeaway purposes only due to Responsible Service of Alcohol regulations, and because we want you to enjoy our beers straight from the tap while you are here.

HOW LONG DOES THE BEVERAGE LAST IN A GROWLER?
The Brewhouse range of beers will last between 3-5 days in one of our growlers, while other beer or ciders will last 1-3 days. You should always keep your growler in the fridge as the beer is ‘live’ and does not contain preservatives. When we fill your growler, we purge it with CO2 before filling it, which helps to keep the beer fresh.

CAN I BRING A GROWLER FROM ANOTHER VENUE, TO BE FILLED AT THE BREWHOUSE?
Brewhouse staff are happy to fill any growler with beer from their venue. An empty growler is a very sad thing!

WHEN CAN I GET A GROWLER AT THE BREWHOUSE?
We can fill and sell growlers up until 11pm, Monday-Saturday, and up until 10pm on Sunday night.

Growlers make excellent gifts and are always a welcome addition to any BBQ or social gathering. They look impressive and are a great talking point!

Empty growlers are $15. Refills range from $17.00 - $34.00, depending on your beer choice.

If you would like to buy your own growler, see our friendly staff in Basement Brewhouse.
