SBW, Basement Brewhouse, Bridge Road Brewers
Our fifth brewery to be featured at Basement Brewhouse’s Sydney Beer Week event is Bridge Road Brewers, located in Beechworth in Victoria’s High Country. It was founded in 2005 by Ben Kraus, who has created a range of beers that have been brewed traditionally, naturally, without pasteurisation or preservatives.
Ben and his team focus on small batch, hands-on brewing, which means each bottle of their beer gets the attention it deserves. They are constantly tweaking their recipes and developing new ones to satisfy the curiosities of their customers, as well as their own.
We caught up with Ben ahead of the SBW event (22-29 October).
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BREWERY.
Bridge Road Brewers was actually a bit of an accident! I was a budding young winemaker and I went over to Italy in early 2000 to learn more about the art of making wine. Somewhere along the way I got distracted and ended up working in a traditional microbrewery in Innsbruck, Austria. From that day on, I was hooked, and came back to Australia as a beer brewer!
I started the brewery in my dad’s backyard in Beechworth before moving the operation to the town’s old coach house and stables. Visitors can now come in and sit among our wooden-clad tanks to sample our range of beers, while watching us as we work. You will also be treated to the best pretzels this side of Munich, thanks to my wife Maria!
WHAT BEERS ARE YOU PROVIDING THE BREWHOUSE FOR THE EVENT?
Bling Bling, our imperial IPA is one of them, and it’s a belter of a beer. Based on our original IPA, the Bling, we really do throw everything at this one. The heavy hop profile is pretty standard for a double IPA but the thing that makes this beer different, is the big malt profile. The malt profile was upped to provide balance to a usually out of balance beer style.
We’re also going to roll our These Pretzels Are Making Me Thirsty sour. This is a little clean wheat ale, traditionally salty from the saline water which is natural to Leipzig. We have used our stockpile of leftover house-baked pretzels to give this refreshing, cleansing ale it’s signature salted finish.
HOW DO THESE BEERS FIT INTO YOUR NORMAL RANGE?
Bling Bling is only brewed once or twice a year, and is the big brother to the Bling, and the mid strength IPA Little Bling. And our Pretzel sour is a limited release which was actually brewed for GABS Festival this year. Only a few kegs made it outside of that event and the brewery!
WHICH IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE?
It’s hard to say. It’s like choosing between children. I’d have to say I look forward to the Bling Bling, but it isn’t something I drink regularly.
