Sydney Beer Week, SBW, Batch Brewing Co, Basement Brewhouse
Crafties unite! Sydney Beer Week 2017 (SBW) is almost upon us! From 20-29 October, brewski lovers from all over the country will descend on Sydney to explore some unique craft beers and new watering holes, while taking in the sights and sounds of our great city.
Basement Brewhouse is getting involved in the festivities, inviting some of its favourite breweries to create two different styles of beer for customers to try, exclusively for SBW. Batch Brewing Co is one of those breweries, and we caught up with owner and head brewer Chris Sidwa for a bit of background on his company.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BREWERY?
Batch is a neighbourhood brewery which produces a constantly evolving, seasonal, ethically-sourced and creative range of beers. We sell through our brewery Tasting Room and also to local pubs and bottle shops.
We have been up and running since 2013 where we started with six brew tanks. Since then, we’ve added another 11 tanks and have expanded our ‘neighbourhood’ to include venues in the west, North Shore, eastern suburbs and southern shire.
WHAT BEERS ARE YOU PROVIDING FOR THE BREWHOUSE EVENT?
We thought customers might like to try our hoppy and approachable WCIPA, which is definitely for the adventurous palate. Someone who enjoys the tropical fruit aroma of a pale ale but wants to turn it up a notch will love this drop. The mosaic hops deliver a pineapple nose while the Chinook and Centennial follow through with citrus and a firm bitterness.
We will also have the tart and refreshing Hay-Z kettle sour, which we hope will change your mind about what beer can be. Our kettle soured beers are typically fermented with fruit to deliver a vibrant colour and lively flavour.
HOW DO THESE BEERS FIT INTO YOUR NORMAL RANGE?
These two styles book end a range of beers brewed at Batch that include the approachable, unchallenging and refreshingly crisp Just Beer, which is a lager brewed with a heritage variety of barley malt from the Riverina. We also have our core American Pale Ale which was our first beer, and strikes the perfect balance of malt sweetness and hop aroma and bitterness.
I suggest starting an afternoon with the Hay-Z sour as it’s the perfect palate cleanser. But be prepared for the unexpected tartness; you need to trust that the flavour will settle in nicely so you can then move onto the more expressive WCIPA.
WHY SHOULD CUSTOMERS TRY BATCH BEERS?
If you’re heading to Basement Brewhouse for Sydney Beer Week, we think our beers will definitely stand out from the crowd. We want people to try the new styles and tell us what they think!
If you like what you taste and you want to stop in at the Batch Brewery, you’ll be greeted by 10 unique beers and knowledgeable staff who are happy to walk you through the whole range. All of our beers are available to enjoy on site, or to take away. We’re located in Marrickville, and we’re just 300m from Sydenham Train Station.
