eco straws, Bankstown sports
Bankstown Sports is always looking for ways to change and improve their operations to make the club a more sustainable organisation. We have already implemented a range of waste management plans to divert as much rubbish away from landfill as possible and we have improved our recycling methods for both front and back-of-house.
Recently, we began a trial of new oxo-biodegradable straws in some of our bars, as another way to minimise the amount of landfill we contribute to. Created by Eco-Straw, the oxo-biodegradable straw is a plastic straw with the additive ‘reverte’, which alters the molecular structure of the plastic to reduce its lifespan to just 18 months, instead of 30+ years – like a normal straw.
After some exposure to sunlight and oxygen, the oxo-biodegradable straw begins to degrade until it eventually becomes brittle like a leaf and breaks down to micro-biological form. Eco-Straws do not taste or feel any different from normal plastic straws and there is no health or safety risk to customers.
We have been trialling oxo-biodegradable straws in Atrium Bar for several weeks and the feedback from customers has been extremely positive. We are now planning to roll out oxo-biodegradable straws at several other bars within Bankstown Sports in the coming weeks.
