Milperra Public School’s Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) is made up of parents, carers, teachers and community members who meet regularly to contribute to decision-making, developing policies and management plans to benefit the school. This year, the P&C were tasked with the operations of the school canteen. With this new responsibility, key areas of improvement were identified to ensure the retention of a NSW Healthy Canteen status.
Milperra Public School P&C also recognised the need to decrease the presence of single use plastic in the canteen and work with the students to raise awareness and education on the importance of using reusables.
In September, Bankstown Sports provided $3,000 in funding to support Milperra Public School could achieve their goals of reducing plastic and ensuring the canteen followed hygienic practices.
Milperra Public School P&C President, Jenni Barns, said Bankstown Sports’ support has allowed the school to have access to important equipment.
“Bankstown Sports’ support has provided us with the recourses to install an oven and dishwasher. Consequently, we are now able to cook our food at optimum heat and clean all our reusable equipment at a high temperature, ensuring the safe and hygienic serving of food. It has also reduced the amount of time volunteers have to spend in the canteen washing and drying our canteen equipment. The school has employed a Canteen Supervisor to ensure the ongoing consistent preparation of food and ensure hygiene safety in the canteen.”
