DNA mist marks out thieves

The Bankstown Sports Club Group has improved security with the installation of the cutting-edge DNA Guardian system.

DNA Guardian works by spraying intruders or people fleeing from a crime with a colourless substance which marks the perpetrators’ skin.

The DNA tracer remains on the skin for up to six weeks and is visible under ultraviolet light, so suspects can be verified by police.

This system will be used in conjunction with CCTV footage to identify people carrying out armed robberies or other security breaches.

Bankstown Sports Club is in the process of installing DNA Guardian at all of its sites including at Birrong Sports, Bankstown Sports Bowls and Baulkham Hills Sports.

“We expect this new technology will have a strong deterrent effect on people thinking our clubs are soft targets for crime, especially as we approach the holiday season,” says Bankstown Sports Assistant Secretary/Manager Mark Condi.

“This technology gives the police the forensic evidence they need to link the thief to the crime,” Mr Condi says. “It’s very new in Australia, although it has been in use for several years overseas.”

DNA Security Solutions Managing Director Tania Jolley says, “Being proactive is far better than being reactive. The cost to a business of installing a DNA Guardian system is typically half to a quarter of what it costs the business in an armed hold-up.”
