$40,000 from Bankstown Sports helps local nuses

Bankstown Sports Club has donated $40,000 to Nurses and Midwives at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital for a 2011 scholarship program to promote clinical excellence. The scholarships will be awarded next month on International Nurses Day, May 12.

It’s the sixth year the club has made such a donation, through its Community Development Support Expenditure scheme.

In 2006, Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital established a Nursing and Midwifery Scholarship fund and Bankstown Sports agreed to commit a total of $200,000 over five years allowing nurses and midwives to take part in further education as well as attending and presenting at international conferences.

Activities undertaken through the scholarship program to date include attendance at:

10th International Scientific Symposium on Thrombolysis and Acute Stroke Therapy (Budapest)
6th Asia Pacific Conference Against Strokes (Cairns)
Advanced Paediatric Life Support Course
Immunisation Course, College of Nursing
15th Asian Pacific Critical Care Conference (Sydney)
6th International Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nursing Network Conference (Brisbane)
Australian Diabetes Educators Association Annual Scientific conference (Adelaide)
Cardiac Society of Australia and NZ Conference (Adelaide)
13th Annual Oxford Wound Healing Summer School (UK)
Breathing New Life into Maternity Care (Alice Springs)
College of Emergency Nursing 8th International Conference
Masters degree International Health Management

Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services at Bankstown Hospital, Caroline Farmer, says “Eighty-four nurses and midwives have directly benefited from the scholarships to date. It is enormously exciting to learn of the fabulous and enlightening experiences shared by the staff and to appreciate the enthusiasm generated as a result.”

“I would like to sincerely thank the Board and Executive of Bankstown Sports Club for their extremely generous support.”

Bankstown Sports Assistant Secretary/Manager Mark Condi says “The scholarship program is a typical example of the club’s commitment to providing opportunities to people fulfilling vital roles in our community.”

“Nurses and midwives are invaluable and we are pleased to be able to help enrich their professional lives, which will be of great benefit to the wider Bankstown community.”
